Who We Are

UGANDA GATSBY TRUST (UGT) was started in 1994 as a Non-Governmental Organization based at the Faculty of Technology, Makerere University with the aim of supporting manufacturing and value-adding businesses that have potential to grow. The Faculty of Technology, Makerere University acted as an institutional framework through which linkages with small Scale Enterprises (SSE) could be established and maintained. In 2019, UGT resolved to focus on skilling students and other youth through enhancing practical and soft skills needed for industrial development and organizational growth. The Skilling Initiative (SI) empowers the youth with market-placed and work-readiness skills.

Our major goal is to create work opportunities for graduate young women and men from different universities across Uganda through the provision of micro enterprise skills development opportunities.

The escalating levels of unemployment among the youth (64% of youth between 18 -30 years are unemployed) propelled UGT to adopt an approach of preparing University students before they join the world of work. UGT appreciates the fact that, collegiate life is totally heterogeneous from the formal or non-formal working life.

Our Goal

At the end of the day, the project’s aim is to create work opportunities for graduate young women and men from different universities across Uganda by providing micro enterprise skills development opportunities including business incubation, linkages to robust markets, access to professional networks for expert guidance and mentorship (entrepreneurs mostly don’t have the management, financial, compliance knowledge and skills to grow their businesses beyond ideation or start-up level), and access to finance and in particular micro-credit (small scale loans) for business roll-out.
